Bikers’ Classics: already a classic
Welcome to you all.
Almost twenty years ago the Spa-Francorchamps GP was taken off the calendar. A great shame, but those who love speed, racing sounds and nostalgia got something magnificent in return. This years’ Bikers’ Classics will once again lure classics racing enthusiasts to the Belgian Ardennes from June 11th until June 13th. In only its eighth year the Bikers’ Classics has already become a classic.
“The past is our future”, that is the motto of the Bikers’ Classics organisation. The organisers cherish the past and thus keep the memory of times gone by very much alive. The mysterious Spa-Francorchamps circuit is the ideal location for old heroes to return into the limelight and for famous four strokes and screaming two strokes to make themselves heard again. As if the sounds had never faded away. The Bikers’ Classics does not only attract thousands of spectators, but also former riders who without exception experienced the charms and dangers of the picturesque circuit. Fifteen times world champion Giacomo Agostini has almost become a regular at the track where he dominated the 500 cc class from 1966 until 1973. The Italian maestro will have a busy time, for he will mount both the 350 and 500 two stroke Yamahas as well as the roaring MV Agusta 500/3.
This year’s starting list is shaping up nicely, with people like the Dutch 50 cc world champions Jan de Vries and Henk van Kessel, the former Honda team-mates Jim Redman and Luigi Taveri, Carlos Lavado from Venezuela and America’s first ever road racing world champion Steve Baker. The Bikers’ Classics organisation is also proud to announce that Hugh Anderson from New Zealand and Northern Irishman Tommy Robb will return to the European continent for the first time in twelve years as guest riders in the immaculate Yamaha Classic Racing Team. Also British Suzuki aficionado Steve Wheatman will prepare a fleet of wonderful factory Suzuki’s for 1978 Francorchamps winner Wil Hartog, his countryman Boet van Dulmen and possibly even the extravagant Italian Marco Lucchinelli.
At this year’s Bikers’ Classics the sidecars will also be put into the spotlights. The event will shine even more thanks to the appearances of former champs like Steve Webster, Steve Abbot, Egbert Streuer, Alain Michel, Rolf Steinhausen, Klaus Enders and Max Deubel. The organisers are also working hard on signing the Swiss three wheeler phenomenon Rolf Biland. Many of these riders might be reunited with their historic BMWs, Königs, Krausers and Yamahas as well as legendary sidecar builders Louis Christen (LCR) and Charles Auf der Maur. The presence of these historic champions, their machines and makers on the track and in the paddock will almost surely turn this sidecar revival into a huge success on beforehand – an event not to be missed.
