Bikers’ Classics : In honour of Moto Guzzi

On the 11th, 12th and 13th of June, the Moto Guzzi eagle will spread its wings over the track of Spa-Francorchamps. Not only the sidecars but also this old Italian brand, launched in 1921, will be honoured.

The many Guzzi lovers can meet and join hands and the rest of the spectators will be able to discover the dynamism of a company that has marked motorcycle history for almost a century now.

A retrospective exposition …

Honouring Moto Guzzi asks for a historical exposition. Just like we did last year for Luigi Taveri, we will once again set up a large tent in the paddocks at the endurance boxes. The machines having marked the history of this manufacturer will be put in the spotlights. All of them ancient bikes, restored into their original state, each one even more beautiful than the other one. You’ll discover some rare jewels and will be able to look at the many technical treasures that have marked this brand’s history.

From Mandello to Francorchamps…

For this occasion, Moto Guzzi has organised a trip from the Mandello factory to the track of Spa-Francorchamps. An initiative organised by the company itself, which will start from the factory, go over the Alps and off to our country via a large number of small roads. If you like to, you can join the caravan in Italy and accompany you southern fellowmen to Spa on a trip that’ll most definitely be very entertaining. More details regarding this journey can be found on our website.

The V8 on track…

In 1954, while the 4 cylinder Gilera and MV Agusta were living their glory days, engineer Giulio Carcano decided to build a V8 Moto Guzzi. An eight cylinder V-engine, liquid cooled and equipped with eight 20 mm Dell’Orto carburettors. An engine developing a power of 75 hp at 12.000 rpm, a very unusual range at that time. In six months time, engine and bike were built, but many problems occurred. The strong power destroyed tyres, clutch and suspension. In 1956 however, Bill Lomas succeeded in finishing 3rd at the Belgian MotoGP with this V8. The following year this same V8 achieved many honourable results but there were also some drop outs, as the bike wasn’t reliable at all times.

This ingenious motorcycle, which was way ahead of its time, retired from the tracks in 1958 (this also meant the end of Bill Lomas’ career), but you’ll be able to admire it at our next Bikers’ Classics.
